Quick answer

No. Plug it directly into a wall outlet for reliable operation and to avoid voltage drop across an extension cord.

Unboxing

  • Each retail box contains one StopWatt unit (or more, depending on your bundle) and a quick-start card.
  • Inspect the unit for shipping damage before use. Do not use a unit with a cracked casing or exposed internal components.
  • No tools, batteries or app download are required.

Placement per floor or circuit area

StopWatt works locally on the circuit it is plugged into, so placement affects how much of your home benefits.

Home size / layoutRecommended unitsPlacement guidance
Apartment or small home (up to 1,200 sq ft)1 unitPlug into an outlet near the electrical panel or the largest motor-driven appliance (fridge, AC).
Medium home (1,200–1,500 sq ft), single floor2 unitsPlace one near the panel and one near a secondary motor load such as a laundry room or workshop.
Multi-storey home1 unit per floor minimumEach floor is typically on separate circuits, so a unit on each floor covers more of the wiring.
Large home (1,500+ sq ft)3 unitsDistribute across floors or wings, prioritizing rooms with HVAC equipment, pumps or workshop tools.

Installing the unit

  • Plug directly into a standard grounded wall outlet rated 90V–250V.
  • Do not use an extension cord, surge-protector strip, or outlet timer between the wall and the unit.
  • Insert fully so the prongs make firm contact; a loose connection can prevent the indicator light from turning on.
  • Allow a few seconds after plugging in for the indicator light to activate.

Understanding the indicator light

Light behaviorMeaningAction
Solid lightUnit is powered and operating normallyNo action needed
No lightNo power reaching the unit, or outlet is deadTest the outlet with another device; reseat the plug
Flickering lightLoose connection or unstable outlet wiringTry a different outlet; if it persists, contact support
Light turns off after workingPossible internal fault or an outlet issueUnplug, try another outlet; if unresolved, request a replacement

Safety do's and don'ts

  • Do use only on the stated 90V–250V voltage range.
  • Do plug directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.
  • Do keep the unit away from water, direct sunlight and extreme heat sources.
  • Don't attempt to open, modify or repair the unit yourself.
  • Don't use a unit with visible cracks, burn marks or a damaged plug.
  • Don't rely on StopWatt as a surge protector, GFCI, or safety device of any kind — it performs power-factor correction only.

Troubleshooting

SymptomLikely causeFix
Indicator light never turns onDead outlet, tripped breaker, or loose plugTest outlet with a lamp; reset the breaker; reseat the unit
Light on but no apparent effect on appliancesNormal — power-factor correction is not always perceptible day to dayNo fix needed; track kWh over a full billing cycle to evaluate results
Unit feels warmNormal light warmth during operationConcerning only if hot to the touch or accompanied by odor — unplug and stop use if so
Unit stopped working after months of useRare component faultContact support; still within the return window may qualify for replacement or refund
Breaker trips when plugged inOutlet or circuit issue unrelated to the unitTry a different circuit; if breaker still trips, have an electrician inspect that circuit

Storage and care

  • If removing a unit temporarily, store it in a dry location away from extreme temperatures.
  • Wipe the casing with a dry cloth only; never submerge or spray liquid cleaner on the unit.
  • No maintenance, filters or batteries are required during normal use.
